Capital City Teacher Residency Program

The Capital City Teacher Residency (CCTR) program is a 2+2 degree program in collaboration with Columbus State Community College, Columbus City Schools district, and Capital University. The CCTR program offers individuals the opportunity to take online courses through Capital University to earn their education licensure, and potential bachelor’s degree, while getting paid to work during the day in the Columbus City Schools system. Graduates who successfully complete the two-year program may be eligible for a full-time teaching position in the Columbus City Schools district – taking the stress out of finding a job after graduation. The CCTR program is mirrored after medical residency models in that students take courses from Capital University professors while gaining practical experience from mentor teachers in classrooms in Columbus City Schools.

Capital City Teacher Residents have two pathways to earn education licensure for Primary Childhood Education and/or Intervention Specialist.

Pathway 1

Post-Secondary Degree students who have earned a bachelor’s degree will enroll in two years of online coursework through Capital University. During the program, students will work a paid position in the Columbus City Schools district to be eligible to apply for their license.

Pathway 2

For individuals who have earned an associate’s degree or some college credit. Students who have earned an associate’s degree from an Ohio Consortium Transfer community college, can apply to Capital and enroll in two years of online CCTR coursework. Students who have earned some college credit or earned an associate’s degree from a non-Ohio Consortium college should apply to Capital and the CCTR program. All college credits will be evaluated for transfer to Capital and a plan for courses can begin. Participation in the CCTR program allows students to work in a paid position in Columbus City Schools during their studies, helps them complete their bachelor’s degree, and ensures they are eligible to apply for their teaching license.

Students interested in earning A bachelor’s degree in education with eligibility for licensure who do not yet have any college credit can explore School of Education program options.

Learning and Experience

Capital City teacher residents don’t just learn ideas in a book that they can one day apply in classrooms; they apply those ideas while they learn. This innovative, “Grow Your Own” education model prepares students to thrive as future teachers in Columbus City Schools. In the Capital City Teacher Residency program, our students learn to teach with intention, apply theory and research in classroom practice, and grow to become empowered, strategic educators. Coursework is complemented by hands-on, field-based experiences in actual classrooms. It’s here where you will learn from master teachers, faculty supervisors, full-time Capital education professors – and each other in student teaching seminars led by university faculty. A Capital City teacher is a different kind of teacher who is prepared to lead, inspire, and make a difference in the lives of countless children.

Outcomes

The Capital City Teacher Residency program is designed for current college students and working professionals who have an interest in pursuing a career in education. Why the Capital City Teacher Residency program?

The Capital City Teacher Residency program is a licensure pathway for students interested in a career in education and interested in diversifying the Ohio teaching force. The Capital City Teacher Residency Program is designed with the working student in mind. During your two years of study at Capital, you will be eligible for paid experiences in Columbus City Schools. How does the online learning work?

The coursework has been specifically designed to be asynchronous so that you can complete the work at your own pace and on your own time. How will I be supported in the CCTR program?

Although the coursework is asynchronous, you will work closely with our faculty through your coursework, clinical experiences, and various seminars. You will be assigned a mentor teacher at your placement school as well as a faculty supervisor from Capital University who will help you throughout the program.
